Žijí ve stepích a lesostepích. Pestrušky jsou hlodavci, který žijí podobně jako pískomilové. Jsou barvy světlejší hnědé namíchanou s šedou. Mají nasobě od čumáčku až po ocásek černohnědý pruh. Teto proužek je viditelný už u třídeních mláďat. Dospělí jedinec měří až 10cm, ocásek měří až 9 cm. Ouška jsou malé, skoro nejskou vidět. Když začnete šustit pytlíky, nastane v terárku běhání a panáčkování. Jsou aktivní především v noci. Pestrušky se dají lehko vycvičit, rádi si hrají a prozkoumávají své obydlí. Přes den jsou schovaní, ale někdy, když vás uslyší tak vylezou.
